La Cinémathéque de Grenoble : 50 years of archiving and sharing film heritage
The Cinémathèque de Grenoble was set up in 1962 and for the past 50 years has been collecting, archiving and sharing film-related heritage. The association screens more than a hundred films a year in the Juliet Berto auditorium, as well as other organising other screenings elsewhere in the Isère region.
Additionally, every year in early July, the Cinémathèque de Grenoble organises an outside Short Film Festival in Grenoble – France’s oldest festival of its type. The 36th Festival takes place between 2-6 July 2013
The association has a collection of nearly 3,500 short films and 2,500 feature-length films, stored on 16mm and 35mm silver film. In its non-film collection there are 13,500 posters, more than 1,600 books, photos, reviews, journals, a video library and more than 6,000 (newspapers? “titres” can mean several things) and a collection of film paraphernalia. Alongside managing the collection and ensuring it is made accessible to the public, the Cinémathèque de Grenoble has developed ties with Grenoble University, facilitating a history of the cinema course and organising regular screenings.
